A Mario Party for handhelds, was too early
Mario Party Advance, released on January 13, 2005.

Mario and all his familiar, this time only 4 friends, are going to throw a party on a handheld for the first time. It's just like the previous games, quite simple. Roll the dice, move, choose your path on the board, and play small mini-games. There are also ways in between to take down your friends.

The way of moving on the board works with "Mushrooms," which count as a turn. You lose 1 Mushroom every turn. Once you win a mini-game, you earn a Mushroom. If you lose many mini-games, your Mushrooms will run out quickly, and the game is over.

Many mini-games are based on luck, making the game quite "non-skilled." The mini-games are also much simpler compared to the previous games, which could be due to the hardware of the Game Boy Advance.

The previous Mario Parties revolve around collecting stars, in this game, it's about completing tasks.

More focus on single player; still fun!
Mario Party Advance is very different from the Mario Party games we know on the N64 and GameCube. Most of the mini-games and play modes included in the GBA game are geared towards single-player gameplay. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it does mean that Mario Party Advance doesn't really feel like a party game when multiple players are involved. Overall, it's still a great and enjoyable game for true fans of the franchise.

No Mario Party
Mario Party Advance is not a Mario Party.... The game itself is fun, it's just not a Mario Party. The game is definitely recommended. Just as long as you know it's not a Mario Party...
Conclusion: Good but not what it was supposed to be...

Historical Context

Mario Party Advance was released in 2005 and was the first Mario Party game for a handheld console. It brought the beloved series to a portable platform, allowing you to enjoy the party anytime, anywhere. Although the game originally received mixed reviews due to its focus on single-player gameplay, it has gained a cult status among fans of the series over the years. Did you know this is the eighth title in the Mario Party series? Fantastic, right?
